The Clarkston Farm and Garden Club, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization,  works to improve The Village of Clarkston and Independence Township in many different ways.  Through local participation, the group promotes beautification, education & conservation.  The club has received the Hazel Herring Award for Civic Improvement from the Woman’s National Farm and Garden Association in the recent 5 years.  Some of the ways we  help the community are as follows:

BEAUTIFICATION

· Created and implemented plan for downtown honorarium planters.  Provide flowers, plant and maintain planters that line Main Street in The Village of Clarkston

· Provide flowers, planting and maintaining flowerbeds at the Independence Township Library.  This includes the development of the new Children's Literary Gardens which highlight tales such as Peter Rabbit, The Frog Prince, The Secret Garden and The Giving Tree.

· Provide flowers, plant and maintain the Rudy Schwartz Memorial in Depot Park

· Hold annual plant swap the Saturday before Memorial Day Weekend.

· Judge Village Green’s annual apartment beautification competition.

· Working with Clarkston Communication Education, the garden club hosted the first community wide garden walk in July 2006.  The success of this event has paved the way for another garden walk in July 2007!

EDUCATION

· Provided thousands of dollars worth of library materials to the Independence Township Library regarding, among other things, gardening and conservation

· Provide Clarkston School District Schools with programs geared towards conservation and beautification

· Provide thousands of dollars in scholarship money to high school seniors as well as other worthy scholarship programs

· Provide Spring programs with an environmental focus for the public at the Independence Township Library

CONSERVATION

· We proudly donate to various conservation groups such as 4-H, the National Arboretum, the Greening of Detroit, the North Oakland Headwaters Land Conservancy, Michigan Nature Center and the Drayton Plaines Nature Center

 PARTICIPATION

· Annual Christmas Greens Market

Held the first Saturday in December at the Church of the Resurrection, 6490 Clarkston Road, from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.,  this event is the club's primary fund raiser.  Beautiful handmade  and fresh centerpieces, wreaths, roping and small gift ideas are available.

· Annual Plant Swap

“Bring a plant; take a plant” is our motto at this fun jump start to Spring.  Held on the corner of Washington and Main the Saturday before Memorial Day Weekend, the village parking lot is the place for garden trade and talk.

· Art in the Village

Our garden club booth greets crafters, on-lookers and fall enthusiasts at this annual September event with beautiful cut flowers and gorgeous mums.

· Clarkston Blooms

Clarkston Blooms is an extension of our garden club family.  For an annual $10, Blooms receive our quarterly newsletter, The Trowel, an invitation to the garden club July Picnic and Greens Market  Preview Sale.  Blooms assist the garden club as available with all current projects.
